Highlights

If you love exploring the outdoors or are simply drawn to breathtaking scenery, then New Zealand’s Ruapehu region is calling your name. Think bubbling mud pools, snow-covered ski slopes and active volcanoes – where several scenes in ‘The Lord of the Rings’ movies were filmed. With everything from hiking, cycling and horseback riding to skiing the famous Turoa slopes, fishing, white-water rafting and dirt biking, you’ll never run out of things to do.

What You’ll Love…

The Location – A nature-lover’s paradise

Situated within a four-hour drive of both Auckland Airport and Wellington Airport, Powderhorn Chateau is ideally nestled between two national parks: the spectacular Whanganui National Park and Tongariro National Park – New Zealand’s oldest national park and a UNESCO World Heritage-listed site.

The park is home to three active volcanoes, one of which features all-level ski slopes. There are also boiling mud pools, rapids and local wildlife including the brown kiwi and the whio, otherwise known as the blue duck.

The Hotel – Enjoy a bottle of wine, and food and drink credit

With its wooden, ski lodge-style exterior, Powderhorn Chateau could easily be mistaken for a charming European Alpine retreat.

The hotel has two in-house restaurants – including the Powderkeg Restaurant & Bar, where you can enjoy your welcome bottle of wine and spend your NZ$50 credit per room. Take your pick from a menu of fresh dishes created using local produce, all while enjoying sweeping mountain vistas. Plus, start each day with a hearty breakfast for two.

There’s also an indoor heated swimming pool, pool tables, dartboards and boardgames to keep you busy.

Bonus: Stay for three or four nights and enjoy NZ$100 credit per room (instead of NZ$50) towards food and drinks.

Your Room – Alpine style and late checkout guaranteed

Relax and rejuvenate in a Queen Suite, featuring a luxurious queen-sized bed, lounge area, work desk and spacious bathroom. The warm-timbered décor creates a cosy space for you to retreat to after a busy day. Queen Suites with balconies are subject to availability. Rest easy knowing that a 1pm late checkout is guaranteed.

See & Do – Explore nature year-round

Powderhorn Chateau’s iconic building borders the southern slopes of Mt Ruapehu and the spectacular Tongariro National Park – perfect for skiing and snowboarding in winter and hiking and climbing in summer.

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is another popular day hike, with incredible views across the dramatic volcanic landscapes. The track is suitable for most active hikers and takes between six and eight hours.

The national park is also one of several locations where Peter Jackson shot the ‘The Lord of the Rings’ trilogy. Visitors can take an organised (or self-directed) tour of the sites.

We had a fantastic stay at Powderhorn Chateau. We had to reschedule our booking twice, and the staff were incredibly accommodating each time, with issues. We also asked if our young son could stay with us(as we booked through Grabone) and although we offered to pay extra, they kindly let him stay free of charge. The rooms were clean, cozy, and full of character giving off a charming old tavern feel with a warm cabin vibe. It felt like a home away from home, and our son absolutely loved it too. Also tried out their pool, and it’s great! Heated, dim and relaxing. We loved staying so close to the mountain too, it was about 25mins from here to Turoa. Absolutely stunning! The Powderkeg breakfast was delicious, and the staff throughout our stay were friendly, welcoming, and helpful. Overall, such a great place to stay in Ohakune. Highly recommend and we’ll definitely be back!

My wife and I enjoyed a great weekend at the Powder horn Chateau, whilst attending a country wedding of one of our Grand daughters. The hotel provided great service, comfortable rooms that included tea and coffee etc services. The cooked breakfast each day was excellent. All staff helpful and pleasant. Not a cheap place but good value for the money. We would recommend it.

I think the 5 stars says it all. Great room with a little balcony, big enough for sitting in the fresh air - table and 2 chairs provided. comfortable bed, great shower, well-thought-out use of space. Only negative - they stock the mini-fridge with way too much stuff to BUY so there is no room to add any personal items like meal leftovers, plain & free water to chill, bottle of wine, etc. Great indoor pool heated to just the right temp. Try to sit on the slanted corner on the right-hand side of the deep end - whooopsss! It's like a slide. Fun!
