There are good hotels. There are great hotels. And then there is The Mount Washington Hotel, a truly grand hotel dating back to America's guilded age. It's magnificent grounds and lobby along with the spacious rooms befit its status as one of the best destination hotels in the US. The amenities (restaurants, shopping and grand mountain views) ara all outstanding. The hotel secured its place in history by hosting the 1944 Bretton Woods. Befitting it's historic status the hotel even has it own ghost.

This is a huge resort but the hotel is no longer as majestic as it was in its glory. The deferred maintenance is evident throughout the property from frayed, dirty rugs to chipped and beat up furnishings it no longer should be considered a 4* property. Our ‘deluxe king room’ is anything but deluxe. There is no refrigerator, no beverage service for coffee or tea in the morning. The bathroom has a tiny tub/shower and the toilet is child sized (if that’s even a thing) but definitely not adult sized (we’re trim and fit). The faucets leak water every time you turn them on. The restaurants are decent but not what I consider worthy of 5 star rating although the staff is very accommodating. The only exception was when we required a refrigerator…. apparently you have to ask for one in advance. In all the 4/5 star hotels I’ve stayed in beverage service and a refrigerator were standard in my room. Everything is very old. I felt like the porch areas which are a prime amenity of the property had truly terrible cushions and were falling apart. At over $600 per night …..we were very disappointed in the overall condition of what we thought would be an iconic highlight to our visit. I have stayed in much higher quality properties for less $$.

Looks can be deceiving. The Hotel is absolutely beautiful from the out side with amazing views of the Mountains. However, our room was infested with Asian Lady Beetles all over the ceiling and Crown molding. Had to call house keeping 3 times before they finally sent someone up to clean them up and still didn't get all of them. They told us they would comp us Breakfast for the insect infestation, then tried to charge for it later. The girl at the desk said "I don't see anything about a Breakfast on your room, Let me look". Really you didn't even look before trying to denying it was there? Then when she finally actually looked at our account "Oh, yes I see it now"! Dinner at 1902 was also disappointing. The Farm Stand salad first came undressed (Just plain vegetables) and then they brought out this tasteless green goddess dressing to go with it after we asked. Although my wife ordered her Filet Med Well, it came out Med Rare at first then the next one came Med. Overall our experience was less than what we expected and now realize why this hotel is not part of the American Express Fine Resorts program.
