About the Experience
Your kitchen needn't feel like a strange land and your oven needn't be the enemy - master your cooking space with the help of today's exciting deal! At Crave, they're running a 6 week 'Master The Basics' cooking class with the talented Chef Frank Schatz of the Culinary Cartel. Each class covers a different area, and you can choose to nab just one voucher for the class you'd like to take, or snap up a few vouchers to take part in even more of the course. Whether you’re a beginner in the kitchen looking to progress beyond boiling water or an advanced home cook wanting to take your cooking to the next level, the cooking basics series is just right for you. This series goes beyond just following recipes and explores cooking techniques that are the foundations for all recipes. This will help you master many dishes rather than sticking to your one tried-and-true! Chef Frank will help you learn to be confident in the kitchen and teach you how to improvise using the ingredients you have. You’ll learn the basic science and proper cooking methods that will make all cooking a breeze, from quick weeknight family meals to entertaining for a crowd! After each class, the group will sit down together to enjoy the meal you've all just prepared.

  • KNIVES, STONES AND STEELS: SKILLS AND MISE EN PLACE - Thursday 13 June, 6:30pm - 8:30pm
  • Start your training with basic, essential skills in the kitchen and working with your most important tools – your knives. You'll be shown all sorts of knives and what they are used for, how to sharpen and hone your knife to perfection. Then move on to Knife Cuts (brunoise, julienne, chiffonade, etc). You’ll learn about cutting surfaces, setting up a work station, proper prep procedures, keeping food fresh and safe, and the basics of kitchen safety. Get ready to become the best home chef you can be! Once you've practiced that, you will use your new skills to make dinner which you’ll enjoy with a glass of vino or juice
  • SAUTÉ, STIR FRY AND GARNISHES - Thursday 20 June, 6:30pm - 8:30pm
  • It’s time to put your newly-honed knife and kitchen skills to use! In this second class, you'll chop ingredients for sautéing and stir frying, and break out the sauté pans for a night of stove top fun! While cooking up some delicious international dishes for those winter months, your class will explore topics such as choosing the right pans and utensils, oils vs. butter, why to add oil only to a hot pan, and proper procedures for ensuring both proteins and veggies are done to perfection. You'll even explore how to set your cooking on fire, the safe way, with flambé.
  • CONFIT, BRAISE AND STEW - Thursday 27 June, 6:30pm - 8:30pm
  • You'll continue the technique of cooking foods by being shown how to make the best confit, a fantastic way of preserving meat and other ingredients (by submerging in oil). You will cook a delicious traditional braised meat and make a quick vegetable stew.
  • SAUCES, CONDIMENTS AND DRESSINGS - Thursday 4 July, 6:30pm - 8:30pm
  • Chef Frank will demystify those French sauces you know and love (and are a little afraid of making!).  Think creamy sauces such as béchamel, hollandaise and velvety demi-glace that makes fantastic gravy. Say goodbye to lumpy, soupy and tasteless sauces forever.
  • PLATING AND DESSERTS - Thursday 11 July, 6:30pm - 8:30pm
  • You'll be shown how to plate up some restaurant style dishes to wow your dinner guests, using local foraged produce and sauces. Chef Frank will touch on a couple of different desserts to wow your guests.
  • KITCHEN BATTLE (CREATE A 3 COURSE MEAL) - Thursday 18 July, 6:30pm - 8:30pm
  • Use all of the skills that you have learnt and cook a 3-course meal using skills learned in your previous classes. At the end of the battle, enjoy lots of great food and conversation as the class dine to their hearts delight on the last class together with your newfound foodie friends.
Crave Cooking School

Crave Cooking School is a purpose built commercial kitchen in the heart of Lyall Bay. Established in 2010, it is the perfect venue to learn how to cook while having fun. Classes are 100% hands on, use only the freshest ingredients, and are hosted with guest chefs from the best restaurants in town. Great for novices and pros alike, and with small class sizes, you get individual attention to pick up the tricks of the trade!
